Merkel says NATO action plan not necessary for Georgia

By Jamila Babayeva

German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not consider it necessary to grant the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) to Georgia at the NATO Summit in Wales.

Merkel, addressing a joint briefing with Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in Berlin on June 2, said this is not necessary.

"Of course, in some form we will note Georgia's success on the path to integration with the alliance, but this will not be granting of the MAP," she said.

Merkel stressed that Georgia is making progress on the path to integration to the NATO, and the alliance countries will assist Georgia in this in the future.

In late May, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly called on the Alliance member states to consider moving Georgia closer to NATO at its summit in Wales in September by granting it a Membership Action Plan (MAP).

During a meeting with Garibashvili, Merkel also expressed a desire to hold the Georgian-German economic forum in the near future with a view to deepen the economic relations between the two countries.

Merkel gratefully accepted the invitation by Gariabshvili to visit Georgia. She will visit Georgia before spring of 2015
