Turkmenistan, UN mull co-op on fighting drug trafficking

Regional representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Central Asia, Alexander Sychev is on a working visit to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, the Turkmen government reported.

Topical issues relating to the implementation of national, regional and global UNODC projects, as well as further cooperation issues were discussed at meetings in Ashgabat.

Turkmenistan is actively cooperating with the UN in this area as a party to three international conventions on combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988

The country is implementing a number of regional and national projects, as well as programmes for the UNODC, EU and projects with the participation of the UK and the U.S.

Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan whose territory is being actively used for cultivation of narcotic drugs, according to UN data.

Turkmen media outlets reported in September 2013 that a large consignment of drugs was seized on the Turkmenistan border.
