Medvedev calls South Ossetia conflict a
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said the developments in Georgia`s breakaway republic of South Ossetia are "a serious warning" to the parties involved in other "frozen conflicts."
"The developments in South Ossetia have shown how dangerous the potential stand-off in some frozen conflicts might be," Medvedev said during a meeting with Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin in the Russian town of Sochi.
He said that after Georgian leaders "lost their minds," all these problems became exacerbated, resulting in a military standoff.
"This is a serious warning to everyone. I believe that, in discussing or considering other issues, we should approach them in this very context," the Russian leader said.
Following an August 8 Georgian assault on the pro-Russian region of South Ossetia, Russian troops struck at the Georgian armed forces with overwhelming force. A ceasefire was, subsequently, reached to end five days of deadly fighting. Russia withdrew the bulk of its troops and tanks from Georgia on Friday but built up its forces in and around the two separatist regions and left other military posts deep inside Georgia. The Russian invasion has caused an international outcry and damaged Moscow`s already tense relations with the West.
