NATO to upgrade Georgia`s air defense system - top official
NATO and the United States will upgrade Georgia`s air defense system, Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Batu Kutelia said.
Kutelia told reporters that the issue had been discussed in meetings with NATO representative for South Caucasus and Central Asia, Robert Simmons, and NATO`s top operational commander, US General John Craddock.
"The renewed system will allow us to fully protect Georgian air space from any flying objects," Kutelia said.
Kutelia added that NATO has pledged to provide full support in seven key areas during the overhaul of the South Caucasus republic`s defense infrastructure.
A number of Georgian cities, including the capital, Tbilisi, were subjected to an air offensive after the country clashed with Russia in its breakaway republic of South Ossetia on August 8. The fighting raged for five days.
