Georgia, Turkey agree on protection of cultural monuments

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has visited the province of Tao-Klarjeti and viewed a site of Georgian cultural monuments at the end of his official visit to Turkey, the president's press service said today.

President Margvelashvili thanked the Turkish side for the protection of Georgian monuments, according to the report.

"I am happy that today we have the opportunity to see our ancestors' work," he said. "I want to emphasise that at present, Georgia and Turkey have civilised governments doing everything to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations."

The protection of cultural heritage was discussed during the Georgian president's meetings in Ankara.

"We were promised that the restoration of the Ishkhani temple would be completed in 2014," secretary of the Georgian Security Council Irina Imerlishvili said. "As for Georgia's Oshki medieval monastery, the process of its reconstruction will begin this year. Georgian specialists will be involved in this process."

President Margvelashvili became the first Georgian president who visited the historical monuments of Oshki and Ishkhani.
