Tbilisi expects no significant changes in relations with Russia

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili does not expect significant changes in relations with Russia after Sochi Olympic Games.

"I do not expect anything special, no improvement, no deterioration of relations," Garibashvili said at a press conference on January 16.

He added that Georgia has done a lot to normalize relations with Russia. "The new leadership of the country did not take provocative actions," he noted.

Georgian PM also said during his visit to Davos in late January, no official meetings were held with representatives of the Russian authorities.

Garibashvili went to say that Georgia not only intends, but is also obliged to assist Russia in ensuring security during the Olympic Games.

"The fight against terrorism is a task of any normal country and in this respect we are cooperating with all countries," he said.

Garibashvili said Georgian special services are taking special security measures to avoid any complications in connection with the Olympics.

"We could minimize all risks and these measures will be strengthened during the Olympics," he said.

Garibashvili stressed that Georgia together with the international community intends to fight against terrorism.

"Our participation in the NATO peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan is very important. We are ready to continue our efforts to contribute to ensuring international security," he noted.

Garibashvili added that nothing will change the country's course toward integration into NATO.

Georgia and Russia, its giant northern neighbor, have maintained no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions -South Ossetia and Abkhazia- and later recognized the regions. Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
