PACE urges Moscow to fulfill its commitments

By Jamila Babayeva

PACE has urged Russia to completely fulfill its commitments, PACE co-rapporteur Boriss Cilevics said in Tbilisi on January 17.

"PACE's position on this issue has not changed and this organization calls for implementing the resolutions on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia," he said.

Cilevics expressed regret over construction of a barbed wire fence along the line of contact in the territory of Georgia's separatist regions, stressing that this is not Russia's only violation.

Georgia and Russia, its giant northern neighbor, have maintained no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions -South Ossetia and Abkhazia- and later recognized the regions. Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.

PACE co-rapporteurs Michael Aastrup Jensen and Boriss Cilevics visited Georgia on January 13 - 15.

They met the president, the speaker of parliament, premier, the foreign and justice ministers, the minister of internal affairs, and the state minister for reconciliation and civil equality.

Discussions at the meetings were focused, in particular, on political developments after the elections, constitutional reform, and reform of the justice system.
