Iran, EU start second day of talks

By Sara Rajabova

Representatives of Iran and six major world powers started the second day of negotiations on the implementation of the Geneva nuclear deal, reached between the sides in November, 2013.

Abbas Araqchi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs and Helga Schmid, a deputy for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, opened the second day of talks in Geneva on January 10, Press TV reported.

Nearly seven weeks after signing a landmark nuclear deal, Iran and six world powers hope to reach an agreement on its implementation this week.

Araqchi, Schmid and U.S. Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman held talks on the remaining issues related to the "Joint Plan of Action" on January 9.

Araqchi described the negotiations as "very serious and technical," saying the talks were "on the remaining differences which exist between Iran and the P5+1 on how to implement the Joint Plan of Action."

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned Hassan Rohani, his Iranian counterpart, to mull the issues surrounding implementation of the Geneva agreement on January 9.

Representatives from Iran and the six powers concluded expert-level discussions on December 31, 2013, on ways to devise a mechanism to implement the interim deal.

Under the November agreement, Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment to 5 percent - the grade commonly used to power reactors. The deal also commits Iran to stop producing 20 percent enriched uranium and to neutralize its 20 percent stockpile.

At the same time, the agreement allows Tehran to continue enrichment research and development.
