Russia spent $1bn on war in Georgia: experts
Military action in Georgia cost Russia at least $100 million a day, a Russian research group estimates.
This amount includes expenses for warfare and humanitarian activities, the evacuation and resettling of refugees as well as provision for their medical aid, the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies said.
The analysts did not calculate the cost of destroyed military machinery, but concluded that, if the cost of the destroyed tanks and warplanes is included, the figure will be much higher than $100m.
The Centre further believes that Russia spent some $1 billion on military action in Georgia during the week`s time. The Russian government has yet to announce the official cost of the operation.
It is noteworthy that the Centre estimated that Georgia spent twice as much as Russia -- $200m a day -- on warfare in its breakaway republic of South Ossetia.
Russia sent troops to South Ossetia and pounded Georgian positions on August 8 after Tbilisi launched an offensive early in August to retake the self-proclaimed, pro-Russian region. After a ceasefire was reached to end five days of deadly fighting between the two countries, Russian troops began to pull out of the areas surrounding the Georgian town of Gori, moving back toward Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, a Russian Defense Ministry official said.
