EU supports Georgia on reforms on EU integration

The European Union supports Georgia and Moldova in carrying out reforms on integration with the EU, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy said.

"If Georgia remains committed to the values which are important for the EU, establishes the rule of law, and does not allow selective justice, and if there is free media in the country, then it will be closer to the EU," Stefan Fule told journalists on November 25.

He said that EU will be able to protect Georgia better, if Georgia approaches EU.

Fule expressed confidence that after initialing the Association Agreement, signing this document will take about a year.

Earlier, new Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said Georgia, where exemplary European elections were held, is an integral part of Europe. According to the president, now signing the Association Agreement with the EU is the main strategy of the Georgian government.

The president also said that the Georgian society and the political spectrum have common views on the choice of Georgia to integrate into the EU.

The country started negotiations on the Association Agreement in July 2010. The Agreement will replace the 1996 agreement on partnership and cooperation with the EU.

Georgia expects to initial the Aassociation Agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership Summit, which will be held in Vilnius on November 28-29. President Margvelashvili will lead the country's delegation at the summit.
