Georgia should find common ground with Russia: official
Georgia should find common ground with Russia, advisor to the newly elected president of Georgia Vano Machavariani said at a press-conference on November 12, commenting on the country's newly elected president Giorgi Margvelashvili's interview with Russia's "First Channel".
According to the advisor, the presidential administration will pay special attention to foreign policy.
"Giorgi Margvelashvili's interview was good. It is important to
find common language with Russia and to make steps forward. We have
a difficult situation with Russia. I hope that certain progress
will be achieved," the advisor said.
While talking about Margvelashvili's statement on a possible visit
by an official Georgian delegation to the Sochi Olympics,
Machavariani said that in this regard, the current difficult
background and conditions, as well as society's mood will be taken
into consideration.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in
late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with
Moscow and has called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia
and South Ossetia occupied territories.
