Tajikistan increases coal production
By Aynur Jafarova
Tajikistan has produced over 432,000 tons of coal in the first ten moths of 2013, Energy and Industry Ministry reported on November 7.
The mentioned figure shows a 60 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The volume of the produced coal is two times more than the forecasted figure.
About 378,000 tons of the produced coal was marketed, 7,500 tons lower than the same period in 2012.
The ministry said that coal production in the country has increased due to the transition of large industry facilities from natural gas to coal.
Coal delivery to large industry facilities started on July 10. About 72,000 tons of coal was delivered to Tajik Aluminum Company, over 32,000 tons to Huaxin Gayur Cement, about 30,000 tons to Dushanbe Thermo Power Plant, and over 10,000 tons to Tajikcement in the first ten months of the year.
Coal is a much-needed commodity in Tajikistan that faces chronic shortages of natural gas and electricity, mostly supplied from neighboring Uzbekistan.
Tajikistan is a great consumer of coal as well. The total volume of coal in the country, which has few fossil fuel resources, is estimated at about 4.5 billion tons.
The population of rural areas uses coal due to lack of electricity in fall and winter and also the limits put on electricity consumption.
162 enterprises currently operate in the field of coal production in Tajikistan.
