Tbilisi does not expect Geneva talks format to change

Georgia does not expect the format of the Geneva talks to change, Head of the Georgian delegation at the Geneva talks, First Deputy Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani told media.

The Georgian delegation took part in the meeting on November 5-6.

According Zalkaliani, the agenda of the talks includes the discussion of the security issues in the region, the construction of barbed wire fences on the contact line with the separatist regions.

The issue of using force will be thoroughly considered during the discussions.

"You know that Georgia has committed not to use force," Zalkaliani said. "The Russian Federation must take such an obligation now. This will be a step forward in the Geneva talks."

Meanwhile, Russia believes that Georgia must sign the agreement on non-resumption of hostilities with Tskhinvali and Sukhumi. Tbilisi insists on signing the agreement with Moscow.

The first meeting of the official representatives of Russia and Georgia was held as part of settling bilateral relations in Geneva on December 14, 2012. Afterwards, the discussions continued in Prague. The sides agreed that such meetings will take place again in the next 2 or 3 months.

Georgia and its giant northern neighbor Russia have had no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia - and later recognized the regions.

Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
