Switzerland calls for improvement of Tbilisi-Moscow ties

Switzerland called for improvement of relations between Tbilisi and Moscow, which have had no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008, as Swiss Ambassador to Georgia Guenther Baechler met with newly elected Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili.

Baechler told media that he had conveyed congratulations from the Swiss government to Margvelashvili.

"We appreciated the holding of the democratic elections in Georgia," Baechler said. "We will have partnership relations with Georgia. We represent Russia in Georgia and want the relations between the two countries to be improved."

Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia - and later recognized the regions.

Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
