PM sees European officials' visit as support for Georgia's European course
By Nazrin Gadimova
The foreign ministers of Poland and Sweden still have some doubts about the stability of Georgia, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has said, adding that it is natural because two distinct leaders - he and President Mikheil Saakashvili - leave their posts almost at the same time.
Both Swedish and Polish Foreign Ministers, Carl Bildt and Radoslaw Sikorski, arrived in Georgia as part of a tour that covers visits to Moldova and Ukraine before the Eastern Partnership summit to be held in Vilnius in November.
Ivanishvili said that the visit of the foreign ministers implies support for Georgia's European integration.
"This visit reaffirms the strong support for Georgia's European integration and the importance of the Eastern Partnership initiative in this process," he said.
The Polish foreign minister expressed confidence that Georgia will initial the association agreement with the EU at the Vilnius summit.
"I agree with the Prime Minister, who said that the country should become a member of the European community," Sikorski said. "However, the opposition is part of the democratic world. The quality of how the power is transferred is very important. It is important that these principles be respected in the future."
As Ivanishvili said after the meeting with the foreign ministers of Poland and Sweden, the main topic of discussions was the presidential election to be held in Georgia on October 27.
"We all hope that this will be European elections," Ivanishvili said.
This will be the sixth presidential election after Georgia gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. Incumbent President Mikheil Saakashvili cannot run for re-election because of the two-term limit in the Constitution.
Upon the inauguration of a new president in 2013, a series of constitutional amendments passed in the parliament of Georgia from 2010 to 2013 will go into effect. The amendments envisage significant reduction of the president's powers in favor of the prime minister.
