Caspian sturgeons may disappear in 13 years: Iranian researchers
The fish population of sturgeons in the Caspian Sea will be depleted, possibly within 13 years, if poaching continues, according to Iranian researchers.
The stocks have already shrunk by 25 to 30 percent, which signals a threat of the potential disappearance of this rare type of fish, whose naturally habitat is only found in the Caspian basin.
The findings, by Iran`s International Scientific Research Institute, were released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the Iranian agency in control of radio and television.
Four of the five states abutting the Caspian Sea - Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, and Turkmenistan - are conducting joint monitoring to evaluate the current population of sturgeons. The findings will be discussed at a meeting of the commission on bio-resources of the Caspian planned for September.
