Karatau company, a Kazakh-Russian joint venture, has reached a new milestone in the development of the Budenovskoe-2 field, Kazakhstan's state-owned nuclear holding company Kazatomprom said on September 25.
"On September 11, 2013 a commemorative ten-thousandth ton of uranium was mined there since the mine's start-up in 2007," Kazatomprom said.
Karatau is one of the largest uranium mining companies in Kazakhstan and one of the first in the Kazatomprom structure possessing the technology to process natural uranium to export quality products.
The company, which was established in 2005, is engaged in mining and production of uranium concentrate at the Budenovskoe field and is a socially oriented enterprise.
Kazakhstan holds the second largest uranium reserves in the world. Kazatomprom said earlier that around 5,590 tons of uranium were produced in Kazakhstan in the second quarter of 2013, which is 9 percent over the same period of 2012.
