Lawmakers confirm US envoy to Armenia
The US Senate confirmed the Bush administration`s nominee as ambassador to Armenia after a delay by lawmakers who were unhappy with White House policies on the country.
Lawmakers had delayed consideration of Marie Yovanovitch`s nomination to Armenia in a dispute over the US refusal to label as genocide the World War I-era killings of huge numbers of Armenians, The Associated Press reported.
During the hearing at the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Yovanovitch had said she did not recognize the 1915 developments in Ottoman Turkey as "genocide of Armenians" and backed President George Bush`s stance on the issue. Yovanovitch said, however, that she and the US government acknowledged the mass killings and deportation of 1.5 million Armenians.
"The United States recognizes these developments as a great tragedy of the 20th century," she told the hearing.
