Georgian election body declines referendum initiative on early parliamentary elections

Georgia's Central Election Commission (CEC) has refused to hold a referendum on early parliamentary elections.

At a meeting of the commission it was decided to refuse the initiative group to hold a referendum on the question: "Do you agree Georgia to hold early parliamentary elections in 2014?", the CEC reported on August 22.

This referendum was proposed to hold in parallel with the presidential election scheduled for October 27.

An initiative group, which includes human rights activists -- Nana Kakabadze and Gela Nikolaishvili -- offered on August 11 to hold a referendum. The group grounded its initiative of holding the early parliamentary elections with "unequal distribution of power" in the country's parliament.

Earlier, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has dismissed the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections after circulation of some media reports in this connection.

Recall that an initiative group also applied to the Central Election Commission of Georgia on July 23, demanding a referendum on early parliamentary elections in 2014.

President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement lost the October 1, 2012 parliamentary elections, gaining only 67 out of 150 seats in parliament and became the opposition, while the rival Georgian Dream led by Bidzina Ivanishvili won the election, gaining 83 seats.
