Turkish paper reveals new details of talks with Armenia
Ankara is concerned that the details of recent talks between
Turkish and Armenian diplomats in Switzerland will be disclosed,
the Turkish Daily News newspaper close to Turkey`s Foreign Ministry
reported. It said that this would cause discontent of
Azerbaijan.
The report said further that Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian`s indicating direct talks with Turkey has turned into a stimulus for Ankara. 10 years prior to that, Turkey had held informal meetings with Armenia. It has been revealed that Turkish Foreign Ministry adviser Ertogrul Apakan and deputy adviser for Central Asia and Caucasus issues Unal Cevikoz held talks with their Armenian counterparts in May and July. According to Turkish Daily News, the sides reached agreement on the strategy and mechanism of resolving outstanding problems between the two counties during the talks in Bern. The parties discussed establishing a commission to deal with the opening of the Turkish-Armenian border and payment of reparations for the alleged "Armenian genocide". They also tabled the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and relations with Azerbaijan. The Turkish and Armenian representatives decided to separately address the issue of forging diplomatic relations and to set up several commissions for the purpose.
The report also said former Armenian President Robert Kocharian has rejected Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan`s proposal to set up a commission of historians to study the 1915 developments in Ottoman Turkey and instead insisted on establishing an inter-governmental commission.*
