Georgian PM dismisses reports on early parliament elections
By Nazrin Gadimova
Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has dismissed the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections after some media circulated reports to that end.
According to the Georgian media, the issue of early parliamentary elections is almost resolved and Ivanishvili will leave 50 people from the current composition of the parliamentary majority in the new electoral list. The reports claimed that leaders of the Republican Party and Defense Minister Irakli Alasania's Our Georgia - Free Democrats Party are not among them.
"We have not considered this issue. We must learn to respect the Constitution and the law. There are no signs of new parliamentary elections," Ivanishvili said.
He also noted that there was unfounded criticism of Republicans in the media.
"I think groundless attacks are often made on the Republicans. They have great political experience in parliament, and I do ask, especially our supporters, to stop undeserved criticism of the Republicans. I call on them to refrain from attacking Parliament Speaker Davit Usupashvili as he is a statesman and a very experienced, balanced and talented man," Ivanishvili said.
An initiative group applied to the Central Election Commission of Georgia on July 23, demanding a referendum on early parliamentary elections in 2014.
President Mikheil Saakashvili's Unated National Movement lost the October 1, 2012 parliamentary elections and gained only 67 out of 150 seats in parliament and became the opposition, while the rival Georgian Dream led by Bidzina Ivanishvili won the election, gaining 83 seats.
