Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti and Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who was on visit to Moldova on July 24-25, agreed to intensify bilateral cooperation.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov thanked Nicolae Timofti for the support at the international level.

"Turkmenistan has substantial reserves of energy and wants to diversify the routes of transportation," Berdimuhamedov said. "We are grateful to the Republic of Moldova for the support that it provides to us in the UN where we are trying to promote a resolution through which we can achieve this goal."

The Turkmen leader also said that Turkmenistan and Moldova agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation in this area in the context of the project to build transit corridors from Asia to Europe via the Caspian and Black Sea regions.

Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime.

The sides expressed interest in strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, with emphasis on the development of agriculture and the energy sector.

A number of bilateral documents were signed in Chisinau, including intergovernmental convention on the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of evasion of taxes on income and wealth, memorandum on cooperation of chambers of commerce, agreement on cooperation between the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova and the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as ministries of culture of both countries.

"We had a good opportunity to discuss various aspects of the problems of bilateral cooperation and identify new joint activities. Recently, the Moldovan-Turkmen dialogue has become much more intense. I am sure that the first visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Moldova will increase the existing capacity of our relations," Timofti said at a press conference after a meeting.

The heads of state agreed that in 2014-2015 Days of Moldovan Culture will held in Turkmenistan and the days of Turkmen culture - in Moldova.
