Georgia, US mull free trade issue
Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze met with Deputy Chief of the US Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro during her working visit to the USA, the Georgian foreign ministry reported.
The sides discussed the Georgian-US economic relations. A special attention was paid to the signing of a free trade agreement and work in this direction.
"Both Georgia and the United States are interested in deepening of the economic relations that exist between the two countries," Panjikidze said after completion of the meeting.
As for the question of signing a free trade agreement, this topic is getting particularly important against the background of the fact that Georgia began to take concrete steps to sign a free trade agreement with the EU, the minister said.
"We have already started discussing this topic with the United States at the highest level. We have agreed today that the mechanisms aimed at deepening economic relations will be discussed," she said.
According to the minister, during a meeting with Sapiro the Georgian delegation provided information on the reforms and changes, including the changes in connection with the Labor Code.
"The reforms that we have carried out in this area and that have been endorsed by the international community, of course, have been well received in the United States," Pandjikidze said.
The meeting was also attended by Chairman of Georgian Parliamentary Budget and Finance Committee David Onoprishvili.
