Incident over Bystrotok channel in focus of Kazakh-Kyrgyz talks
Kazakh Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov and his Kyrgyz counterpart Zhantoro Satybaldiyev mulled the current situation at the Bystrotok water channel running in the trans-border area, Kazakh Prime-Minsiter's web site reported.
During a phone conversation on July 17, Akhmetov urged
Kyrgyzstan to resume water supply through the cross-border channel
supplying water to residents of Zhambyl region's areas near Kyrgyz
border.
The prime ministers expressed a willingness to negotiate to resolve
the current situation.
During the phone conversation the parties also discussed other
issues of cooperation.
The residents of Kyrgyz Kara Buura district blocked the Bystrotok
channel flowing towards Kazakhstan on July 7. They demanded to
review the agreement with Kazakhstan from 2001 on the delimitation
and demarcation of borders, ratified by the Kyrgyz Parliament in
2008. According to the agreement, a land site where Kyrgyz farmers
grazed cattle passed to Kazakhstan.
On July 16 the Kazakh embassy in Kyrgyzstan send a note to Kyrgyz
authorities with a claim to take immediate measures aimed at
resuming water supply through Bystrotok channel.
