Moscow and Tbilisi to discuss developments in conflict zone

The Special Representative of the Georgian Prime Minister for relations with Russia Zurab Abashidze has left for the Czech Republic to meet with Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin.

The sides will discuss developments in the conflict zone on the border, Zurab Abashidze said before leaving for Prague on June 4 at Tbilisi International Airport.

"We cannot ignore the situation at the administrative border. Kidnapping and the entire humanitarian situation is very tense, this of course, should be underlined. Besides, there are certain issues we have been discussing within the last six months. We will summarise the work done after the start of the dialogue," Abashidze said.

Karasin and Abashidze will meet on June 5.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said Russian border guards have erected barbed wire on the border with Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia. According to Tbilisi, in some areas there is an extension of the boundary line into the territory of Georgia.

Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
