Kyrgyzstan to invalidate agreement on Manas transit centre
The Kyrgyz government decided to invalidate the agreement on Manas transit centre with the U.S. from July 11, 2014, Interfax news agency reported on May 21.
The denouncement also touches on all objects and real estate, connected with the centre.
The draft agreement on the denouncement was introduced for the adoption of the state parliament.
The Transit Centre at Manas, formerly called as a military base was opened in late 2001 after the U.S launched its operation in Afghanistan. At present, it accommodates about 1,200 U.S soldiers.
According to Pentagon statistics, the base handles up to 15,000 coalition servicemen and 500 tons of cargo a month.
Cargo transportation
The volume of cargo transportation through the U.S. Manas transit Centre in Kyrgyzstan sharply decreased in 2013, reducing the income of the Kyrgyz airport by 41 percent, KyrTAG reported on May 21.
According to a source in the airport, the reduction may lead to bad results because over 60 percent of the airport income comes from the transit centre.
