Georgian ex-speaker Burjanadze to run for president

Georgia's public organization, National Assembly, has called on the population to support the presidential candidacy of the former parliamentary speaker Nino Burjanadze.

The candidacy of the leader of the Democratic Movement - United Georgia, Nino Burjanadze, was announced at a press conference by the chairman of the People's Assembly, five-time world chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili.

"We believe Burjanadze is the best presidential candidate, she has extensive experience in politics at the highest levels and has the support of the population," Gaprindashvili said.

The People's Assembly believes that Burjanadze will be "a worthy President of Georgia."

Burjanadze twice was Acting President of Georgia during her political career.

Current presidential candidates are the ruling Georgian Dream coalition's representative Giorgi Margvelashvili, Labour Party's candidate Shalva Natelashvili and an NGO candidate Professor Nstan Kirtadze.

The Presidential elections in Georgia will be held in the second half of 2013.
