Armenian opposition leader defies West
Staunchly-opposition former Armenian president Levon
Ter-Petrosian has defied Western nations, saying they were not
interested in the rule of legitimate and powerful authorities in
his country.
"Western countries are content with weak and illegitimate
authorities in Yerevan. Such authorities would wholeheartedly abide
by all of their instructions. I am talking about the Upper
(Nagorno) Garabagh conflict settlement, combat against
international terrorism and other issues," said Ter-Petrosian, who
heads the Armenian Nationwide Movement.
He told a news conference last week that he was looking to stand in
a snap presidential election and the opposition was striving to
achieve its conduct.
"I will certainly take part in the elections. Holding a snap
election is pivotal, as in five to ten years there will be no point
in going to the polls at all," Ter-Petrosian said.
Armenian opposition had refused to recognize the results of the
February 19 presidential election, charging vote rigging. The mass
protests that followed were quelled on March 1 with the use of
force.
He did not rule out that his movement would nominate a different
candidate for the next election.
"We have a very strong movement and decent people. The movement has
10 worthy leaders meeting the highest requirements."
The ex-president added that his bloc would continue its struggle by
peaceful and political means.
