Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili met with Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Wojciech Sawicki in Strasbourg on Monday.

Ivanishvili informed Sawicki about the ongoing reforms in the South Caucasus republic. Georgian-Russian relations were on the agenda as well.

Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Russia after their August 2008 war over the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Georgia lost one-fifth of its territory after the two republics broke away.

On the same day, Ivanishvili met with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks and thanked him for the active cooperation.

The parties discussed the preparation of an unbiased report on the observance of human rights in the occupied territories of Georgia.

The same day Ivanishvili met with the President of the European Court of Human Rights Dean Spielmann. According to the prime minister's press office, the meeting was held at the court.

Ivanishvili said at the meeting that the European court is the basis of "European public order" and is based on the principles of human rights.

"The new Georgian government came to power promising to protect human rights," he said. "It declared a new strategy which will relieve the Strasbourg court of Georgia's complaints."

Accompanied by Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani and Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze, the Georgian PM also had a meeting with PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon.
