Georgia to analyze military ops during August war

Georgia will assess the military operations taken during the August 2008 war with Russia, Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said in an interview with Georgian Channel 9 TV channel.

He said this will not be a political assessment, but the analysis of how the reserve worked, and why villages were not evacuated. Alasania said that many questions arose, including how the eight billion that has been allocated to the army has been used and what the cause of the defeat of the Georgian military was.

"The international community does not agree to the changes as a result of the border wars. But we really want to know why Georgia was not able to defend itself in order to have a real doctrine preventing such a case in the future," Alasania said.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with Moscow and labeled the two unrecognised republics occupied territories.
