Iran says unveils new nuclear achievements

By Sara Rajabova

Days after the talks with world powers in Kazakhstan, Iran unveiled the latest nuclear achievements.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has issued an order to launch the Saghand 1 and 2 mines in the central province of Yazd and the Shahid Rezaeinejad yellowcake plant in the town of Ardakan in the same region, as well as the country's first industrial electron accelerator in the city of Taft to mark the country's National Nuclear Technology Day, Iranian media reported.

On Tuesday, Iran marks the National Day of Nuclear Technology.

The uranium extracted from Saghand mines in Yazd will be processed and turned into yellowcake in Shahid Rezaeinejad complex, which has annual production capacity of 60 tons.

Yellowcake is a kind of uranium concentrate powder obtained from leach solutions, in an intermediate step in the processing of uranium ores.

In December 2010, the first consignment of indigenous yellowcake was transferred to Isfahan Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) from Gachin mines under the surveillance of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA).

Also, Iran's first industrial electron accelerator was inaugurated in the ceremony designed and developed by Iranian experts and which enables the country to make use of a wider range of radiations. The machine is used for various medical and industrial purposes.

Besides, five new home-made radiomedicines were unveiled on Tuesday. The radiomedicines have been developed and produced by Iranian experts at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and with the cooperation of the presidential office for science and technology.

Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Nasrin Soltankhah said that the new radiomedicines are used for "diagnosing and curing refractory diseases, cancer in particular".

In the inauguration ceremony of three nuclear achievements, President Ahmadinejad said that world powers seek to maintain their monopoly on nuclear technology by mounting pressure against Iran.

"They caused restrictions and issued threats, thinking that the Iranian nation cannot achieve nuclear energy technology," he said.

Referring to the recent negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the US plus Germany), Ahmadinejad advised the group to cooperate with Tehran since no one could obstruct the Iranian nation's path toward achieving complete nuclear technology.

"The best way for you is to cooperate with Iran... The world must be managed through the cooperation of all nations," the Iranian president added.

Iran and the P5+1 wrapped up their latest round of negotiations on April 6 in the Kazakh city of Almaty. At the end of the negotiations, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the parties have not reached an agreement.

Tehran and the P5+1 have held several rounds of talks over Iran's nuclear energy program. The previous round of the talks took place in Almaty on February 26-27.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the United States and the EU employing this as grounds to impose several rounds of sanctions against Tehran.

Tehran refutes the allegations, saying that as a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
