Turkmen president says carpet factory may be managed by entrepreneurs

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has suggested the possibility of transferring the Abadan carpet factory to the management of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Turkmen government said.

This issue was raised at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.

According to the information, the president addressed the Ministry of Textile Industry with the criticism on the prolonged downtime of nearly a year of the carpet factory in Abadan and the 'failure to take appropriate measures for the proper conduct of work'.

"If the industry is not capable of organising work at the plant, the possibility of its transfer to the management of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs should be taken into consideration," the president said.

According to Berdimuhamedov, in a short time entrepreneurs will conduct work to modernise the enterprise, equipping it with advanced technologies and putting it into operation.

Turkmenhaly SJSC (Turkmen carpet) operates under the Ministry of Textile Industry. Since early 2013, the corporation has produced about 6000 square metres of carpets with a production growth of 105.9 per cent.

Alongside, sales of commercial products grew by 19.1 per cent. The export growth rate was at 106.8 per cent and profitability reached 11.7 per cent.

At the end of the last century, carpet weaving became one of the important branches of the economy in Turkmenistan. Modern Turkmen carpets were declared the largest in the world by the Guinness World Records.

Since 1992, the country celebrates Turkmen Carpet Day which is celebrated on the last Sunday of May.
