Russia calls on Iran to suspend work on uranium enrichment

Russia along with other countries has called on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists following media reports on Iran's plans to increase the number of modern uranium enrichment centrifuges at a nuclear facility, Trend news agency reported referring to RIA Novosti agency.

Earlier on Thursday, media reports said that Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on plans to increase the number of modern uranium enrichment centrifuges at a nuclear facility at Natanz. This site is regularly visited by IAEA inspectors as a part of a bilateral agreement.

"They are encouraged to suspend enrichment work before negotiations give results. They do everything in line with safeguards agreement. The IAEA is notified and will be present to observe the process, but again this is the legalist side of things. Under the political and legal side, we call on Iran together with all member countries of the UN Security Council to suspend work on enrichment for the period of negotiations," Lavrov said.
