Non-governmental newspapers in Iran under closure threat
Twenty three non-governmental newspapers in Iran are under
threat of being closed, Trend news agency reported, referring to
Mehr news agency.
Chief editors of these newspapers wrote a joint open letter for the
country's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, noting that the situation
has reached crisis level, and urging the president to take
necessary measures in this regard.
The letter also said that if the situation does not change,
thousands of people, namely journalists, will end up being
unemployed.
Among the newspapers signed the letter were "Arman", "Aftabe Yazd",
"Aferines", "Ebtikar", Etimad", "Jahane-Eqtisad", "Jahane-Sanat",
"Donyaye-Eqtisad", Kar and Karger", "Mardomsalari" and
"Hembestegi".
Excessive inflation rate, high printing costs, reduction of
subsidies allocated by the state were among the factors influencing
the deterioration of the economic situation.
Under the Ministry of Culture in Iran, there are 5086 licences
issued for the country's newspapers, yet only 3267 of them are
being published daily, weekly or monthly.
