Kazakh border guard indicted for murders

Kazakh border guard Vladislav Chelakh, who is suspected of killing fellow servicemen at a remote outpost along the Kazakh-Chinese border, was indicted on October 1, Radio Liberty reported.

Clelakh's lawyer, Tulegen Berlikozhanov, said his client was also indicted for stealing a handgun, desertion, and stealing state secrets, among other charges.

The lawyer said the charges are "baseless."

The trial is expected to start in November.

Fourteen servicemen and a forest ranger were killed and their bodies were burned on the morning of May 28 at the Arkankergen border post in Almaty Province.

Investigators found the outpost destroyed by fire.

Chelakh, the 15th border guard who was deployed at the outpost, was found alive the following day.

He reportedly confessed to the killings but later retracted his confession.
