Iran: 78 FMs to attend in NAM summit

Iranian deputy foreign minister Hassan Gashgavi said that 78 foreign ministers will take part in 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, Mehr News Agency reported.

Gashgavi said the presence of 78 foreign ministers at a NAM summit is a rare event and even the number of FMs who take part in summits at the United Nations General Assembly is less than this figure.

The NAM summit kicked off in the capital Tehran on Sunday. The two-day ministerial meeting of the NAM is set to start on Wednesday. The meeting of the heads of state and government will open on Thursday with an inaugural speech by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

According to Iranian officials' statements, 120 countries' representatives including 50 high level officials such as presidents, prime ministers and vice-presidents will participate at the NAM summit.

At the opening ceremony of the NAM expert-level meeting, Iran assumed the rotating presidency of the movement for three years. Egypt's Ambassador to the United Nations Mootaz Khalil formally handed over the presidency to Iran.

NAM is an international organisation that brings together 118 countries in the world on the principles of non-participation of military blocs. NAM was officially established by 25 states at the Belgrade Conference in September 1961.
