Moscow striving to boost CIS efficiency
The new Russian leadership has stepped up effort in turning the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) into an efficient organization.
The Russian Foreign Ministry's acting authorized representative, Boris Malakhov, said a federal agency in charge of CIS affairs will operate under the new government, which aims to strengthen Moscow's relations with the other former Soviet republics.
"The decision to set up the agency confirms that boosting interaction with the Commonwealth states that are our close neighbors and partners has turned into our key priority," Malakhov said.
Organizational and technical issues are currently being addressed to launch the entity, he added.
It is unknown at this point who will head the agency. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has recently sidestepped a question in this regard. He added, however, that centers of culture would be opened in each CIS member state in the next two to three years. Such entities are already operating in a number of countries.
Lavrov added that the mentioned federal agency would be vested with the task of overseeing the work of the centers.
Dmitri Medvedev has recently succeeded Vladimir Putin as Russian president.
