Armenians covet Georgian church

21 May 2008 21:12 (UTC+04:00)
Armenian diocese has clashed with Georgian clerics over the affiliation of a local church.
The Armenians' Apostle Holy Church claimed that the Holy Norashen church, which they say belongs to them and was founded as early as in the 15th century, had been appropriated by the neighboring country.
The Armenian church has sent a letter of protest to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the country's government agencies. It went as far as saying that Georgian clerics had ordered to fence off the church for repair and that Armenian attributes there were being replaced with those of Georgians, terming this as "an act of aggression".
Armenians even resorted to threatening the Georgian side, warning that if the development is not countered, this will lead to irreversible consequences.
Holy Norashen, which served as a place of worship before 1920-30s, will be granted to Georgian believers' disposal after the repair is completed.
The Armenian community in Georgia has repeatedly laid down territorial claims against the country. They earlier alleged that the Akhalkalaki region densely populated by Armenians was their historical land.
