New PACE chief opposes passage of “genocide” bill in French Senate
New president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, has said as a French parliamentarian he opposed the adoption by the Senate of a bill criminalizing the denial of the so-called Armenian genocide.
Speaking to a press conference at the start of the PACE winter session in Strasbourg, Mignon said: "I am absolutely against the adoption of this draft law which was put forward by a group of deputies of the French National Assembly."
The PACE president noted the draft law would not solve Armenia`s problems.
"Writing history is not the job of lawmakers and it should be researched by historians," Mignon added.
