Armenia population to nearly halve by 2050: researchers

Armenia’s population will nearly halve to 1.5-1.7 million by 2050, a local research center predicted based on its findings.

According to official figures, the Armenian population stood at 3.27 million as of October 1, 2011.

"The research we have conducted is based on the statistical data provided by the United Nations, and these figures confirm it," says Aharon Adibekyan, head of the Sociometer research center. "The dwindling population numbers are one of Armenia’s gravest problems today."

Adibekyan said that according to UN ethnographers, world nations are divided into four groups – growing, self-preserving, dwindling and those facing the threat of disappearance, and Armenia is currently included in the third group.

The researcher linked the reduction in Armenia’s population with the decreasing birth-rate and emigration which has been on the rise in recent years. The current situation has caused dire demographic problems, he said.

"Due to unemployment 14 percent of Armenians who have families have left the country and received emigrant status," Adibekyan added.
