French senate vote on Armenian ‘genocide’ bill set for Jan. 24: sources
A vote in France's upper house of parliament on a bill criminalizing denial of the alleged genocide of Armenians in Turkey has been scheduled for January 24, Armenia’s News.am website quoted sources in Paris as saying.
Despite strong protests by Turkey, the National Assembly, the French parliament’s lower chamber, passed a bill in December that envisions a jail sentence of up to one year and a 45,000 euro fine for those denying that the "genocide" occurred.
Armenia claims 1.5 million people were killed in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 and 1916 and labels the events "genocide". Ankara dismisses the claims, saying around 500,000 died in fighting after Armenians sided with Russian invaders.
