Swiss parliament cancels debate on Armenian ‘genocide’
Switzerland has cancelled a hearing on the "genocide" of Armenians allegedly committed in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Azerbaijani state news agency AzerTAc reported referring to Turkish media.
The Swiss parliament cancelled the hearing, which was scheduled for Monday, by a 115-69 vote.
Swiss media said that unlike Paris, Bern has no intention to get into confrontation with Turkey over the "genocide" issue.
Despite strong protests by Turkey, the National Assembly, the French parliament’s lower chamber, last week passed a bill criminalizing denial of the alleged genocide. The bill envisions a jail sentence of up to one year and a 45,000 euro fine for those denying that the "genocide" occurred. The draft law will be debated next year in the Senate, the parliament’s upper chamber. If endorsed, it will be submitted to the French president for signing.
Azerbaijan, Turkey’s ally, has condemned the National Assembly’s move.
