Iran allots $420m to save dying lake

The Iranian government has allocated $420 million for measures to save the dying Lake Orumieh, MP Mohammad Reza Haji-Asghari was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying on Tuesday.

Lake Orumieh has shrunk by some 60 percent in recent years due to drought and misguided development policies. Environmentalists warn that unless something is done, the lake will disappear forever.

Campaigners say that if the lake disappears in a few years, it will leave behind 10 billion tons of salt and displace up to 14 million people.
