Turkish PM cancels trip to Syrian camp following mother’s death

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan cancelled a trip to a Syrian refugee camp planned for the weekend, after the death of his mother on Friday, his office said, AFP reported.

The prime minister was planning to visit camps in Hatay, near the Syrian border, where thousands of Syrians have taken refuge, and announce Turkey's roadmap regarding sanctions on Damascus.

"Another date has not yet been fixed for a trip to Hatay," Erdogan's office told AFP by phone.

Ankara has expressed frustration with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for failing to listen to the people, whose almost daily pro-democracy rallies have been met with violent repression, at a cost of more than 2,900 lives according to the UN.

Tenzile Erdogan died at the age of 88 after gall bladder surgery. Her funeral is expected to be held in Istanbul at the weekend.
