Bundestag not to discuss ‘genocide’ of Armenians: German ruling party
The issue of alleged Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians cannot be put on discussion in the German parliament, a member of the country’s ruling party said on a visit to Baku Friday.
"Armenia and other countries that face such problems should resolve their issues with any given state by more progressive ways," Steffen Lemme told reporters. "Otherwise, an attempt to recognize any unproven developments as genocide in the modern-day period is out of place."
Lemme added that recognition of the "genocide" of Armenians by any European country now or in the future is impossible.
According to historians, from 1915 to 1923, Armenians began an uprising, taking up arms against Turkey. To counter these actions, the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle the Armenians. However, the latter claim that their predecessors were subjected to genocide in the process. Ankara rejects the claims.
