Azeri Socar may be authorized to buy Armenia-bound pipeline

TBILISI – Two Georgian lawmakers have made a proposal in parliament to amend the country’s laws to enable foreign companies to acquire stock in the country’s strategic facilities, including a section of the gas pipeline that stretches from Armenia to Russia through Georgia, Georgian news agency Pirveli reports.

Armenian media said the news were met with utter concerns in Armenia, Azerbaijan’s long-time foe, as the measure would authorize Azerbaijani companies to buy the Georgian section of the pipeline. Azerbaijani state energy firm Socar has already expressed interest in such an acquisition.

Prime Minister Nika Gilauri said earlier that initially, 25 percent of the shares in Georgia’s strategic assets will be put on sale at the New York and London stock exchanges.
