Turkish parliament revokes Armenia agreements

ANKARA – Turkey’s new parliament has invalidated the reconciliation agreements on normalizing its relations with Armenia signed in 2009.

According to the Grand National Assembly’s bylaws, the bills not discussed by parliament in its previous composition are considered null and void, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.

Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades due to Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian claims on 1915 "genocide" in the Ottoman Empire. The reconciliation agreements, signed by Ankara and Yerevan in October 2009, require parliamentary approval. However, Turkey has assured Azerbaijan, its ally, that the protocols will not be ratified until progress is made in resolving the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. In response, Armenia suspended ratification of the protocols in April 2010.

Under the rules, draft laws must be resubmitted to be discussed in the new Turkish legislature. Up to 900 bills and proposals have been removed from the Grand National Assembly’s agenda.

Parliamentary elections were held in Turkey on June 12 and won by the ruling AKP party.
