Top Russian official to hold nuclear talks in Iran

MOSCOW – Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia's Security Council, has arrived in Iran, where he is due to hold two days of talks with his Iranian counterpart, Saeed Jalili, and President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, Radio Liberty reported.

Patrushev is expected to raise a Russian plan to revive talks with six world powers on Iran's controversial nuclear program.

The talks -- which involve Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States -- collapsed in January.

During a recent visit to Washington, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov outlined the Russian proposal, under which Iran would address questions about its nuclear program and be rewarded with a gradual easing of sanctions imposed by Western powers who fear the program is aimed at making weapons.

Iran denies the charge.
