Russia bracing for new war against Georgia – ambassador

(Newswires, August 8) – Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan said Russia is bracing for new war against his country during a press conference in Baku on Monday, dedicated to the third anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war.

Mr. Teymuraz Sharashenidze said everything belonging to Georgians and Georgia was banned in the Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions.

"They even prohibited praying in Georgian language in the South Ossetian church".

He labeled the governments of Ossetia and Abkhazia as puppet regimes ruled by Russia, adding that Moscow has given Russian passports to the local residents.

Mr. Sharashenidze said that Russia’s war against Georgia in August, 2008, targeted the country’s plans to join NATO and EU, as well as Trans-Caucasian energy transport projects.

The ambassador stated that Georgian people have a strong will to restore the territorial integrity of their country.

Touching upon the Russian military base in Armenia, Georgian ambassador said that any foreign military presence in the region is a threat to regional security.

"By stating that the war against Georgia was a lesson for Armenia and Azerbaijan, President Medvedev made it clear what can his country give to the peoples of the region as a mediator", he added.
