Number of Armenians naturalized in Russia on the rise

YEREVAN – Over 54,000 Armenians were granted Russian citizenship in 2009, Armenia’s Azg newspaper quoted the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development as saying.

OECD reportedly said in its annual report that the number of Armenians naturalized in Russia has been on the rise since 2005.

The figure has tripled in 2005 from about 19,000 reported in 2001. Over nine years, a total of 272,000 Armenians became Russian citizens.

Besides Russia, Armenians tend to emigrate to France, Poland, Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Greece. Greece, where the number of naturalized Armenians is 12,000, is followed by Poland, Azg said.

The number of Armenians applying for citizenship abroad has increased 22 percent over four years. The biggest number of emigrants head to France. Thus, the number of Armenians emigrating to the country increased five-fold in the nine-year period from 405 reported in 2000.
